Light on Glass: A4A

Let’s just say I read three chapters and had to take a 24-hour break. Keener’s emotion was eeking out of the pages, tangling with my own heart strings and made me reconsider this epic of a romance story I had begun!

And my impression was correct: by the end of the book, my appreciation of life had changed.

That’s what it was like to read “Light on Glass.” Insecurity about self? Yup. Forbidden love, hoping and yet hopeless. Oh my… The enigma of love. This isn’t the typical love story I’m used to. There were layers. So much understated that it gave a haunted feel—and yet you can’t look away. Because in the somberness and darkness is the impression that this is the truth about life most people can’t admit. (Yet Keener braves it and holds nothing back!)

And let’s talk about Keener’s humor! She says life like it is, unabridged truth. And, yes, I was nodding my head—but in the next instant I would never, ever admit to such things. Oh no, not me. I’m too busy trying to keep my good impressions of myself. To hide away the truth that I’m a failure and not sure what I’m doing…

Exactly what the novel is about actually.

And from two sides: The author and her journey creating her novel. And her fictional character, Lucia from Portugal in the late 1700s and her love for the fisherman’s son.

Let me just say: the ending is fantastic! If you don’t love sappy romance stories, this novel is for you! If you adore sappy endings to romance—this novel is for you! And the end will stick to you long after you finish the final page.

At the end of the novel I was so, so happy with my husband, family and life.

How many romances make a romantic-at-heart happy about her circumstances in love and family? This is the first I’ve read that doesn’t have me pining for a new love of my life (Yes, I’m sorry, I just said that) and complaining to my husband that he’s not as romantic as so-and-so in the romance novel I just read. (I love romance novels, but hate the aftermath of returning to real life!)

Curious what a honeybee has to do with Keener’s “Light on Glass”? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

(Hint: This fuzzy guy with give you an appreciation of life. And that’s a promise!)

If I could sum up “Light on Glass” in one word, I would say: “heart.”

Keener holds nothing back. Although “Light on Glass” is a fiction about a novelist and her heroine’s love story, the overarching plot is stuffed with emotion. From cover to cover you’ll find raw honesty about love and life, about disappointments and hopes. So much truth is spilled onto the pages in such a vulnerable way that Keener’s words tangled with my own heart strings and wouldn’t let up until the end—and not even then. Keener takes you on a journey through her somber and contemplative mood—which changes in the next instance to become playful and humorous! An epic of a romantic, find-thyself adventure! And I guarantee that you’ll find yourself in the woven layers penned in these pages too. 🙂

‘Til next time: Keep reading! And remember to applaud those authors. They need some lovin’ after pouring out their hearts!
